“grace unplugged” & “own it” book giveaway

grace unplugged Today I’m doing a giveaway of the books, Grace Unplugged  by Melody Carlson, and Own It by Michael and Hayley DiMarco.

Grace Unplugged, the novel, is based on the motion picture of the same name which hits select theaters on October 4th. The movie stars AJ Michalka (Super 8), James Denton (Desperate Housewives), Kevin Pollak (A Few Good Men), and has performances by Chris Tomlin and Jamie Grace.

Grace Unplugged
(the novel):
“Grace Trey is an 18-year-old singer as passionate about her Christian faith as she is her phenomenal, God-given musical talent. Both traits come from her father, one hit wonder Johnny Trey who found Jesus after losing his chart success two decades ago. When Grace encounters her own music break of a lifetime, the sudden dive into the “real world” puts her deeper beliefs to the test. Pop superstardom is just within reach but appears to require some spiritual compromise. Will Grace reject her faith, or will she own it?”

I think this book really attempts to show the coming-of-age of a girl who has an amazing singing talent, but hasn’t thought much beyond, “I want  to be famous.” Grace represents the good girl with the famous father who gets lost in the business once she reaches Hollywood. (Hello, Miley Cyrus). She begins with a faith that belongs to her parents, but is that faith really her own? Her dilemma is that if she does place God first in her life, should she really continue playing concerts for entertainment in bars, overindulging in alcohol, dressing risque, and dating famous stars?

I liked Toby Mac’s quote, “Grace Unplugged successfully navigates how stardom in the music industry exposes our human frailty. I enjoyed it.”

Own It:
Own It mirrors the book & film by asking what it means to really “own” your personal faith rather than just automatically following in the footsteps of parents, friends, or other influencers. Best-selling authors Hayley and Michael DiMarco help readers understand what to do when faith meets real world challenges. Without solid beliefs, poor choices are likely to follow. You must take the time to really know who you are, who you are becoming, and who God made you to be.”

In Grace Unplugged (book and movie), Own It is the book that helps set Grace free from a wrong, faithless path. She had broken away from her parents, run away from her home and the church, and after reading Own It, she has a prodigal-son-like-return. This book is for those who have doubts, or who have a weak faith, and need for it to regain its fire.
