“a lifelong love” giveaway

A Lifelong Love
Tonight, I have another great giveaway to share with you! Gary Thomas, author of Sacred Marriage has come out with another book about inviting God back into the center of your marriage.

“A marriage with a shared love of Christ—a magnificent obsession—is a marriage that grows ever deeper over time; as God shapes our hearts to desire Him. He is also, in that work, shaping our hearts to desire and enjoy each other.”

There are three things that set Gary Thomas’s A Lifelong Love apart from the countless other self-help marriage books available today.

1: It provides a consistently Biblical perspective on what marriage is, is meant for, and is capable of.

I would not likely read a marriage book if it didn’t have a Biblical basis. I know how essential it is to put God first as the focus of any life-long covenant—especially between a husband and wife. I appreciate the consistent use of real examples of married couples to show what marriage can look like when it encourages both spouses to seek God first.

2: Every chapter ends with a number of discussion questions to help you internalize the material covered.

A study guide is always clutch. One example: when writing about how our commitment to our marriages is “based on our reverence for Christ,” Thomas asks, “What does that say about the centrality of worship? How do you think you’re doing in this area?” If I go through this book with Steve, it opens ups doors for an intimate conversation regarding Christ’s role in our marriage, as well as what it would mean to worship, either together or by ourselves.

3: The book begins by looking at marriage from a single person’s point of view, transitions into what marriage looks like over the course of a lifetime, and ends by giving practical (and sometimes difficult) real-world advice on how to face significant trials throughout the marriage.

This point is really a comment about how the book is structured: marriage needs to begin with strong relationships with Christ and love for one another. The middle section is about taking the initial post-wedding relationship, and growing it deeper over twenty or thirty years. And the last part deals with overcoming big power-struggle issues, how to survive if “liking” one another is replaced by disinterest or complacency, and what it looks like to uphold one’s marriage vows even if your spouse has long forgotten. Throughout all of this, Thomas offers encouraging verses and testimonies. It’s helpful to look down the road at issues we could possibly face, and know that we’ll have this book on the shelf to refer back to in whatever circumstance we find ourselves in. :)
