Steve and I have been slowly updating pieces of our 1920 home, and we decided to do a little change to something that we spend a lot of time looking at--our fireplace. We don't use it as an actual fireplace, but the yellow/orange bricks were looking dirty and dingy. Steve was bothered with the bad grout job someone had done to spruce it up in the past. And with our new gray walls, we thought a bright white fireplace would pop! We used a no-VOC Olympic Icon paint, and the color is "Snow Storm". Steve and I both took turns painting it, and we were done in no time. It did require a second coat the following evening.
This was the before (from Halloween two years ago):
Now:
I think that it would be pretty if the mantel and built-ins were painted white as well, but Steve is a part of the "We Don't Paint Wood" club, and some of the time, I agree. I love when old homes can retain their character. Also, we also know that the tile on the floor is absolutely ugly, but that is a job for another day ;)
The white paint gives the fireplace a fresh and modern look that (in the future) will definitely catch the eye of a potential renter or buyer.
Our mantel is in its normal state--not decorated for any holiday. We took down the Fourth-of-July decor recently, and it's not quite time for fall yet. I found these adorable pineapple prints from "Oh So Lovely". I chose one blue pineapple, since much of our living room decor is blue, and one gold pineapple, just for fun. Putting two floating frames up on each side of the mantel was the best idea! It's so easy to switch up prints for every season.
A pineapple is a symbol of hospitality, and it screams summer to me. The print is free, so if your walls are looking bare, print off a copy for yourself! :)
We love how cozy our living room has gotten in the past few months!
Thanks for stopping by today! We hope to have many more project updates as the weeks go by :)
I'm a huge fan of the white fireplace! And talk Steve into joining the "paint the wood" club!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Astleigh! It will look so good with all of my holiday buntings :)
DeleteIt looks SOOO good. Also, I agree with Steve, don't paint the wood. It's beautiful. Have you ever watched Rehab Addict (it's a home improvement show)?
ReplyDeleteThanks Stephanie! We LOVE Rehab Addict, but have only seen the first season so far. She does such an amazing job with those old houses!
DeleteI love the new look! Maybe you could stain the wood instead of painting it? Then it would keep it's integrity. A darker stain would contrast well with the white :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I agree that a darker stain would be beautiful! I love really dark, walnut stains!
DeleteLooks great! Honestly, I love the warm tone of the wood in the built-ins and the white fireplace really makes the wood tones pop (in my opinion 😊). Also, it seems that natural wood is just starting to make a comeback these days, so maybe Steve is on to something! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for saying so, Christine!
DeleteI hope natural wood does make a comeback! :)
I think the gray and white and wood go really well together! Looks like such a bright yet cozy space!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Kylie!
DeleteThe white fireplace looks so good with the gray walls! We have the gold pineapple print hanging above our bed, I love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mattie!! Cool that you have the gold pineapple too! :) :)
DeleteLOVE that pineapple print, so cute and perfect for summer. I also love your turquoise mason jars. I have a few and they are so simple but stylish!
ReplyDeleteThanks, girl!! I agree, the Masons are so pretty just by themselves :)
DeleteIt looks great! It definitely brightens up the room!
ReplyDeleteThank you, friend!!
DeleteWow! That made a big difference :)
ReplyDeleteI do a lot of double-takes when I look at it still :) :)
DeleteIt looks great! I love your decorating style, everything you do is always so pretty. I also love old homes and the wood in yours is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLook at that cute pineapple!!! Flamingos and pineapples are definitely having their moment right now :) I am so glad I found your blog!! Can't wait to read more!! :) xox
