Strong and Kind Giveaway

As my kids are growing, I can't get enough parenting wisdom from moms who have gone this road before me. I just finished reading Korie Robertson's Strong and Kind which comes out on October 27th. Korie is wife to Duck Commander CEO Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame. She is one of the biggest reasons that I love the show! Willie and Korie have five children and considerable experience after parenting for twenty years. Korie writes about how when her kids were little, she chose two character traits, STRONG and KIND, to guide how she wanted to raise their kids. Her advice is that focusing on two helps you keep the big picture in mind: who you want your kids to be as they grow up?

Each of the book's chapters focuses on a different trait, all taken from this list:

I'm sure we all want our children to have ALL of these character traits, but Korie suggests that choosing just two makes us really focus on instilling those specific values on our kids.

Korie chose STRONG because this world is hard, and children need to be able to handle all of the things that will come their way in life: "We want our children to be resilient so if these storms of life bend them, they will not break, and they will always come back to their faith in their Father in heaven."

She chose KIND because she wants her children to be focused not on themselves, but on others' needs: "Willie and I want our children to have servants' hearts, to love others as they love themselves, and to believe that love and kindness can change the world."

Of course, it's hard to write a whole book exclusively on only two traits, so Korie writes chapters on the other positive values with examples and stories from her own family :) Finally, she proceeds with HOW to promote kids of good character, giving tools and advice for actually carrying out these goals.

(Sidenote: I really love the family photos in the center of the book. They're precious!)

As I'm wrapping up this book, I'm journaling a lot about the traits that I want to see in Nolan and Ephraim. In my head, I can picture the boys that I want them to be, but I've never sat down and NAMED these qualities for them. Once I narrow down to two values, we need to start honing in on how to teach them. And this begins first with Steve and I modeling these two character traits.

If you're feeling like you need some parenting encouragement, or if you just want to read more good stories about the Robertsons, I highly recommend this book :)

If you win my extra copy, or if you decide to buy it yourself (It's on Amazon here), let me know and I will send you a PDF workbook that you can print and journal in as you read Strong and Kind!
