what i wore wednesday

Tribal sweater, Pink scarf
On a freezing cold November day, one obviously grabs the warmest sweater in her closet :) Yesterday was a COLD one. We got a sprinkling of snow, but nothing like the “Wall” that hit Buffalo. I lived on Lake Erie for two years, and it can be a beast in winter! While taking these photos (in under 2 minutes), you can see my lips got a little purple, and a hot mug of coffee was downed when I returned inside!

I can definitely see myself wearing this outfit again and again. The black and white sweater is really complemented by the burst of peachy pink in the scarf. My boys are needier than ever these days, so I have about five minutes a day to brush my hair and swipe on some makeup. These are the golden years though. :) I may be pretty worn, but I have more joy in my life than ever.

twinning

A little bit of adorable for your day . . . Nolan and Ephraim in matching PJs. :)

Even though it’s currently snowing, it’s the first bright morning in days—perfect for a few photos!

You only have a minute before the little one crawls away. . .  :)

Now I’m on the lookout for cute Christmas PJs!

friday favorites

F R I D A Y   F A V O R I T E S

Favorite New Show | “Rehab Addict”
Steve and I discovered Nicole Curtis’s “Rehab Addict” on Netflix, and we are HOOKED. Her house renovating projects are amazing! We love that she keeps the character of the homes and brings everything back to the right time period, while still adding modern amenities. That Minnehaha house—so beautiful. And it’s in the neighborhood that my grandparents went to high school! Steve and I are now busy planning our next projects :)

Favorite New Dinners | French Onion Paninis and Copycat Chick-Fil-A Nuggets
Since Steve works three nights a week, I have been slacking in the cooking department for months. I have made it a goal to cook more and try new recipes. This week, I made these French Onion Paninis, and they were a big hit! I also fried up some Copycat Chick-Fil-A Nuggets, and they were delicious! Both of these meals were actually Nolan-approved as well :)

Favorite New Shirt | jcp Pink & Navy Gingham
Scored this cute shirt for $12, and I will be wearing it often!

Current Favorite Read | The No-Cry Sleep Solution
I can’t recommend it yet because I haven’t finished it. But so far, what I’ve read sounds like very reasonable and practical advice for getting your baby to sleep better. Ephraim is finally in his own room, and going to bed much earlier (thanks time change!) But he is still waking up too many times, and we are ready for some solid sleeps :)

Nolan’s favorite activity | Painting!
It’s funny because when you give Nolan crayons or markers, he usually takes one color, makes a scribble, and is done. But when it comes to paint—he makes some pretty cute, refrigerator-ready pictures!

Least favorite weather | Hello snow
We had our first snowfall last night. Though I’m grateful the snow held off until mid-November, I am not ready for such cold!

Praying this becomes a favorite | Gentian Violet
I’ve been suffering for several weeks with thrush that won’t quit. I had heard about gentian violet from the beginning, but wanted to try some other routes first. I used the purple stuff last night, and I am hoping for a quick cure!

Fave photos of the week:

what i wore wednesday

Pink Gingham, TomsI am loving JCPenney lately. For about a year, I’ve been getting “$10 off a $10 purchase” coupons, and I never let one of those gems go to waste. I usually use them to buy the boys free or nearly-free clothes. Our JCPenney in the mall is tiny—so there is only a small percentage of the brands and selection online. On Monday, I didn’t see anything in the kids’ section that I liked, so I wandered into women’s clothes. This pretty pink gingham shirt really caught my eye when I saw it on the rack. I used two coupons and purchased it for $12 (Originally $48). I bought a size up so that it was a little bit longer, and the sleeves are a little roomier. I am really loving it! There’s a blue version, too, as well as some cute buffalo plaids. Winter wardrobe, maybe you won’t be so bad after all! :)

our bathroom

With old houses, you find very few bathrooms. Our house is from 1920, and we have four bedrooms with only one bathroom (not including the closet with a toilet below the stairs that is currently not in working order).

The bathroom was the very first thing that Steve started working on in July 2013. But since everything had to be custom made, it came to a standstill, and just finally got finished this weekend!

The old bathroom had yucky green linoleum floors, painted wood-paneling walls, and the ugliest fluorescent drop ceiling light fixtures. Steve just went ahead and ripped all of that out :)

He got the walls down to the lathe, then he put up new drywall. If we had unlimited resources, or this were our forever home, he would have taken out the fixtures as well to dry-wall behind them.

We painted the new walls a minty green. Photos don’t really do it justice. It’s hard to take photos of bathrooms! :)

When he ripped up the linoleum, there was obvious damage to the wood around the tub. He replaced the flooring with new wood, sanded the entire floor, and stained everything to match. It turned out beautifully!

So this is how it looked for a year. Steve hadn’t made up his mind what to do with the ceiling above the shower or the vanity—there were some electrical and vent issues to consider. Recently, he decided to just finish the job: he tore it all out :) The light in the shower was a huge no-no and was gladly removed for safety. The exhaust fan/light was taken out above the toilet. (He found a dead bat in that fixture!) This left a series of holes in the ceiling and walls leading up to the attic—hello more drywall!

Now we have a simple, uncomplicated bathroom. Steve plans to add some trim where the old paneling meets the repaired plaster.

We added the shelf above the toilet when we moved in. Steve also switched the light switches, outlets, and covers from dingy to white!

We didn’t touch the tub or the tile above it. It’s another “If this were our forever home” job. . .  We’d love to take out the plastic wall insert, and tile all the way up to the ceiling.

Steve had to custom make all of the door and window casing (to include the window sill) to match the woodwork in the rest of the house.

As he did with the door and window, Steve matched new base moulding and shoe and installed them.

Thanks for stopping by!

Take a look at the rest of our house projects.
