What I Wore

Floral & Jeans

SANDALS!! Goodness, I have missed them. I have less trouble matching my shoes to my outfit. And it feels so good to get some sunshine on my toes! This outfit is one of my go-to’s in the spring. The shirt is not particularly fancy, but the pretty indigo color and the floral pattern make it unique and eye-catching.

Now that we’re a couple of weeks into April, I’m letting my thoughts wander into our summer plans. Steve will be done teaching his classes in May, and then our schedule goes into a simpler mode—yay! Tonight, I am pulling out our calendar to pencil in a road trip for the early summer :)

Spring Sandboxing

It has been a LONG time since I’ve taken photos of the boys outside! Yesterday reached 65 degrees, and we took full advantage of it! After church and lunch with friends, we spent some time outside raking old leaves and making our yard more presentable. It amazes me that while last week the grass was dull and brown, and I wasn’t quite sure it could be revived, this week it is a pretty, bright green! After Ephraim woke up from his afternoon nap, we went over to our friends’ house for a picnic. The rest of the group was celebrating the finish of a run/walk for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Hopefully next year when our kids aren’t quite so little, we can do that part as well!

The boys LOVED playing in the sandbox. Our friends have a small boat filled with sand, and lots of other toys for their grandchildren when they visit :) It was Ephraim’s first time playing with sand, so of course, he taste-tested some handfuls! Somehow I never manage to have changes of clothes in the car when my boys get truly dirty ;)

Nolan got to go for a ride on the motorized John Deere tractor.

And Ephraim loved having the freedom to roam outside!

Today got me so excited for weekends this spring and summer! I intend to savor every minute of sunshine and warmth :)  Today is a high of 75—which is unreal for April!

Friday Favorites

F R I D A Y   F A V O R I T E S

Friday is always a breath of fresh air after a long week! I read a quote last night that just about sums it all up: “Motherhood is an experiment in how long your body can function without adequate sleep or nourishment and fueled only on adrenaline, caffeine, and baby smiles” –Unknown.
How true is that!? I’ll also add—it’s not only physically taxing, it’s emotionally hard. God has used motherhood in my life to grow me so much in a short amount of time.

Here’s to hoping for more sleep this weekend! :)

On to the favorites of the week. . .

On Wednesday, I talked about my favorite outfit of the week—this cotton, Lorelai Gilmore-esque dress with a bright pattern! Steve picked it out for me at Target for only $8! I am so thankful that the weather is warming up so that I can wear dresses again!

If you missed it yesterday, I posted these delicious, deep-dish individual chocolate chip cookies that bake for only 60 seconds in the microwave! It’s a perfect dessert recipe for a date night on the couch :)

I loved sharing about favorite vacation ever—our honeymoon to Cape Cod, Massachusetts! Writing about it made me REALLY want to go back! We tried to taste ice cream from every shoppe we saw, but I’m sure there are places we missed. . . ;)

On Tuesday night, my friends Amy and Nicole hosted a fabulous fondue party for our big circle of mom friends. They made three different cheeses and four different chocolates, and the rest of us brought various foods to dip. It was absolutely delicious—especially the dessert part of the evening. It felt good to sit around with friends and laugh! I think it’s the first time I’ve been out until 10 pm in forever :)

One of my very favorite parts of the week is that I was able to get outside and GARDEN! There was snow on the ground from January until April (it’s finally melted), and now there are little shoots of early daffodils and lots of weeds. I bought some Easter tulips from church on Sunday, and I was reminded that I had planted last year’s bulbs out in our yard. Sure enough, when I raked away some old leaves, I found five tiny growing tulips! I am so excited to watch them bloom this spring!

Lastly, I really enjoyed this short video of Joanna Gaines’s testimony. Steve and I just started watching “Fixer Upper” on HGTV.com, and we are absolutely loving it! Chip and Joanna’s relationship is fun to watch, and her design style is impeccable. Do you watch it?

We have some fun plans this weekend including a first birthday party for one of Ephraim’s girlfriends :) What are you up to?

Individual Chocolate Chip Cookies

Individual Chocolate Chip Cookies

Sometimes (fairly often), I get a craving for chocolate chip cookies, but I know that it’s dangerous to make a whole batch. They’ll sit on my counter and call my name all day long!

Over two years ago, I pinned these individual deep-dish chocolate chip cookies from my friend Erica’s blog—and I finally got around to making them! The recipe makes two cookies, each in a 7 ounce ramekin. Once you get the ingredients mixed—you just pop them in the microwave for a minute each—and they are warm and ready to eat!  With this recipe, I can satisfy the cookie craving without completely overdoing it. A scoop of vanilla ice cream on top would take this dessert to the next level, I’m sure :)

Ingredients:

1.5 Tablespoons butter, melted
1.5 Tablespoons white sugar
1.5 Tablespoons brown sugar
few drops of vanilla
1.5 egg yolks
1/3 cup flour
3 Tablespoons chocolate chips.

Directions
:

Mix the ingredients together and divide into two ramekins. Put in the microwave for 60 seconds each, and enjoy!

What I Wore

Can I start this post by telling you about my long-held obsession with what I call the “Lorelai Gilmore dresses?” Somewhere around season 5, Lorelai starts wearing stunning dress after stunning dress to work at the new Dragonfly Inn. They are fitted knee-length dresses with 3/4 length sleeves, and usually an overlapping v-neck. I was a jeans and tee shirt college girl when those later seasons aired—but I’ve always held on to how wonderful I think those Lorelai dresses look!

Last fall, I was rewatching some G.G. episodes on Netflix when I mentioned the Lorelai dress to Steve. A few weeks later, he came home with this pink and black Aztec-patterned beauty. He had gone to a wedding out of town and secretly searched the clearance section at Target on his way home :)

My Favorite Vacation

What was the best vacation you’ve ever been on?

I always think of Stephen’s and my honeymoon. To date, it is the only REAL vacation we’ve been on together (excluding the trips we’ve taken to visit family). We were twenty-one and twenty-two, college grads of a whopping five weeks, and absolutely, madly in love. Our destination of choice? Cape Cod, Massachusetts! We wanted to visit the ocean, and Cape Cod sounded like the perfect romantic getaway.

After spending two nights in a hotel at home, we jumped in the Cavalier and headed for the East Coast!

Standard road trip food—”Vermont’s Finest” Ben & Jerry’s.

Finally arriving on the Massachusetts coast, we were impressed with the nautical beauty of Cape Cod. What we didn’t expect? It was still cold in mid-June (not quite tourist season yet)! One of the first things we did was stop at the mall and buy Steve a sweatshirt since he only packed tees and shorts :)

We are pretty frugal, so it was something special to eat out every night! At Spanky’s Clam Shack in Hyannis, we both had our very first tastes of lobster! It was good, but I don’t think either of us have eaten it since ;)

Eventually, we found our way onto the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard—it was gorgeous! We bought ice cream from two different shoppes, and this began our “Let’s taste all the ice cream!” honeymoon goal :)

On a visitor’s map, we saw that there was a lighthouse nearby. We started walking, and walking . . . and walking . . . and could not find it! We realized that the map wasn’t drawn to scale, and so we gave up and returned to the ferry. It’s hard to feel let down while taking a walk through Martha’s Vineyard on a beautiful summer day :)

Martha’s Vineyard reminded me a lot of Door County, Wisconsin—my favorite childhood vacation spot (and also where my grandparents lived).

I’m so glad that I got photos of the places we visited and dined. I hope that we can return to Cape Cod someday and revisit all of them!

Since it was too cold to spend time at the beach (let alone swim in the ocean), we had to keep ourselves entertained. We visited all of the little towns we could, window-shopped at the boutiques, and I wasn’t kidding when I said we set out to sample all of the ice cream we could. If we saw an ice cream place, we stopped. Among others, we tried “Sundae School” and “Schoolhouse Ice Cream”—both in Harwich Port. Yum!

And we finally did find a lighthouse! This is Nauset Light in Eastham—and is known for being the lighthouse on Cape Cod Potato Chip bags!

Steve hadn’t seen the Atlantic Ocean before, so we had to get photos of him in the freezing cold water :)

This ice cream at “Katie’s” in downtown Hyannis is “Cape Cod Sand”—we had no idea what that flavor meant (no one does—they’re famous for it), but it was delicious!

Our last day in Cape Cod was rainy, so we went to the mall to see a movie. “The Proposal” was a perfect choice! We still love that movie and all of its Alaska scenes. (Alaska’s on our list of future vacations since Steve was born there!)

That afternoon, we toured Cape Cod Potato Chip factory. In the photo, Steve gave me a disappointed face because they weren’t actually making any chips that day. But we did get free mini bags at the end of the tour :)

After our last dinner, we got ice cream. . . again! This time, it was Cape Cod Creamery in Yarmouth. (I promise Cape Cod ice cream is not endorsing this post :)

So, needless to say, we each gained about five pounds on the trip!

Gosh, I wish I could relive this vacation! I loved the newness of being married, and I was so excited to travel for the first time alone with most incredible man in the world! Sometimes I wish we had chosen someplace tropical. We may never get a chance to do go on a cruise sans-kids, but I know that our Cape Cod honeymoon was absolutely perfect for us, and it is filled with such wonderful memories.  Xoxo.
