Christmas Stovetop Potpourri

I had never heard of "Stovetop Potpourri" until a couple of weeks ago when my friend mentioned that she wanted to make it an activity during our Thanksgiving MOPS meeting. Then last week, Astleigh posted this amazing-sounding cranberry and orange potpourri. I was ready to give it a whirl! You gather delicious-smelling pieces of food and nature, cover them with water in a saucepan, heat on low on the stove, and enjoy the aroma :)

At MOPS yesterday, we filled up small Mason jars with the ingredients that my friend Ashley had already purchased and set out for us. I chose a pine-cranberry-cinnamon-orange version. Doesn't it look like a beautiful combination?!

Here's what you need:

 2 cinnamon sticks
2 sprigs of pine
1 Tablespoon whole cloves
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/3 cup cranberries
1 teaspoon anise
orange peel

There were two other varieties to try:

For a peppermint smell, use 2-3 peppermint sticks, 2 sprigs of pine, and 2 cinnamon sticks.

And if you aren't into deep Christmasy scents, try 1 sprig rosemary, 2-3 cinnamon sticks, lemon peel or wedges, and a vanilla bean pod.

My house smelled heavenly yesterday! Such a fun little experiment to try for yourself :)

  2. I think I will try this using some sprigs from our Christmas tree! We're cutting it down on Saturday, and it would be fun to have this on the stove while we're decorating it. :)
