What I Wore Wednesday

Merci Tee, Vest, Jeans, Clogs

A while back, I realized that my closet seriously lacked long-sleeve shirts. I’ve been on the lookout ever since, and I found this cute “Merci” tee at JCPenney a few weeks ago. From far away you can’t tell, but looking closely, the letters are made up of tiny, round black beads. I picked it up with a coupon for only $5! I like how it looks when it’s layered underneath my black puffer vest.

I saved some of my Christmas money for a trip to Ulta on Saturday. I had read on a friend’s blog that hot curlers really worked on her stick-straight Swedish hair. My stick-straight Swedish hair is notoriously bad at holding a curl with a curling iron. So I thought I’d buy the curlers she recommended—and the fancy hair setting spray too. On Sunday before church, while the baby was taking a nice nap, I used the curlers for the first time and was slightly disappointed when I arrived at church with barely a curl. I blamed it on having freshly washed hair, and the fact that there was freezing rain involved.

I tried the hot curlers again before taking these photos. I used the spray, rolled up my hair, waited for the curlers to completely cool, took them out—and nothing stayed. As you can see, I had one nice kink on the right side of my face :) When I saw this in the photos on the camera screen, I was unimpressed, and quickly pulled my hair into a ponytail. I don’t really want to return the curlers, but I also feel like I wasted my money.

Is my hair just way too long for curlers and curling irons? Any advice?

  2. Your outfit looks super cute! If you aren't happy with how the curlers and spray work with your hair, I'd return. I think Ulta has a good return policy, and I'd hate for you to feel like you wasted your money. Have a great day!

  3. Maybe try pairing the spray with a curling iron? I'd return the curlers, but I know that's a big trek for you :/

  4. You know I love the puffer vest, and that tee is cute too!
My hair doesn't hold curl very well either :( In the past when I had really long hair like you, there weren't any curlers, curlling irons, etc that ever worked for me :( As soon as I cut it I noticed curls holding a little better even without product. I think the weight of my hair just pulled it down so much. Good luck!

  5. Love, love, love the shirt! My hair is naturally stick straight, but I've found a technique with a curling iron that gives really great curl! I've been thinking about putting a video tutorial up on the blog about it. The technique might work for you!

  6. Rachel! After I straighten my hair it WILL NOT hold a curl unless I use my flat iron to curl it. It works so well and my hair will keep the curl for days/until I wash it out. There are tons of instructional videos on Youtube if you need step-by-step instructions. In my profile pic on facebook I had curled my hair with my flat iron if you want to see how it looks on me!

  8. My daughter has super straight, very long hair too. (Not sure where she got it since I have frizzy, wavy hair, ha!) And we had tried everything - curlers, curling irons, etc. with no success either. She loves the "Cute Girls Hairstyles" video blogs and found a no-heat curl option on there that we tried and let me just say, wow, at the curls it created! It's awesome! We still have to spray a good bit of hairspray on it to make it last, but it does create A LOT of curls! And sometimes we even have to let it "relax" and soften a little before we spray it so it's not too curly - a problem I never thought we'd have with her hair, ha! Here's the link to the exact one we use, scroll own to the bottom for video tutorial (it's really easy too!), but they have a lot of other options on their site as well that may work too. Granted, most of their videos/styles are created for young tweens/teens (my daughter is 11), but they have some that could be adapted to look great for all ages. http://www.cutegirlshairstyles.com/hairstyles/time/5-10mins/sock-curls-no-heat-curl-hairstyles/

  9. Did I miss the post when you got ombré hair?! Super cute! My hair never held curl either, but now I put in mousse and styling cream before I blow dry, then hairspray before and after each curl. I also wrap my hair around the curling iron instead of clamping it, that way the heat distributes more evenly and curls the whole piece and not just the end. Another tip: I sometimes curl my hair and while it's still hot I roll each curl up after hitting it with the curling iron and bobby-pin it to my head. That way it cools in the curled position and my hair doesn't weigh it down and straighten it as it cools.

  10. is your hair thick and/or do you have a lot of hair? when my hair was as long as yours, it wouldn't hold much curl either. and if it did, it would relax out fairly quickly. i have fine hair, but A LOT of it. i think it just weighed too much to hold curl :(

  11. In my experience with hot rollers ( I use them all the time) they don't work well the first couple of weeks, I know that sounds crazy. But seriously keep plugging them in and using them for a couple weeks and see if it makes a difference. I have long thick hair and hot rollers are the only way my hair will curl. :)

  13. What a great deal on this fun top. I have stubborn short hair that don't seem to take curlers well either. I have noticed that when I curl next day hair, it is much more compliant.

  14. Have you tried using a texturizing spray and letting it dry then using a curling iron or hot rollers? I've heard great things about Redken Wind Blown or Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. As someone with coarse and textured hair that holds curl well, I am envious of your smooth, sleek, beautiful straight hair! I would try the texturizing sprays to see if that helps give your hair a little more of what it needs to help it hold the curl. Good luck!
